News & Knowledge Webinar: “Advancing Health Equity: Lessons from the Past Leading Toward an Inclusive Future” On October 27, 2022, Dr. Karen L. Smith, a N.C.-based family physician and passionate equity advocate, presented a new webinar in Curi’s Health Equity series on “Advancing Health Equity: Lessons from the Past Leading Toward an Inclusive Future.” During this session, Dr. Smith provided a historical review of the “separate but equal” concept in the medical field and how discrimination was embedded as a way of life for patients and practices of the past. She also explored how the COVID-19 pandemic revived some of those sentiments and challenges for U.S. patients and providers—and discussed opportunities to take steps toward real change in healthcare. In addition, Dr. Smith helped listeners: Identify equity-oriented healthcare delivery challenges faced by patients, physicians, and systems—from the past and now Understand downstream efforts motivating policy and advocacy towards community health Recognize the value of sustaining equity-oriented initiatives and the powerful impact of social determinants of health A recording of the webinar is embedded below.
