Pennsylvania Handbook: Advanced Practice Providers

WHAT TYPES OF DUTIES MAY ADVANCED PRACTICE PROVIDERS SUCH AS CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE PRACTITIONERS OR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS PERFORM?

Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) such as Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNP), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), and Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), function under physician supervision.  They as well as Physician Assistants (PAs), are professionals trained, certified, and licensed to perform a variety of medical tasks under supervision by, or in collaboration with, a physician.

In Pennsylvania, the State Board of Nursing regulates CRNP, CRNA, and CNM nursing specialties, and the State Board of Medicine regulates Physician Assistants.
