OB-GYN Toolkit

The severity of obstetrical medical malpractice claims continues to rise. These claims often lead to high settlement costs or significant jury awards due to the long-term injury to the mother or infant. Curi’s OB-GYN Toolkit is provided as an educational and risk mitigation tool for organizations to improve outcomes in high-risk obstetrical situations.

The toolkit addresses common sources of claims, including: shoulder dystocia, second-stage labor management, prolonged category II fetal heart rate tracing, neonatal resuscitation, indications for placental pathology evaluation, and indications and actions for cord blood gases in newborns.

The toolkit emphasizes the importance of staff education and readiness, standardized guidelines, structured post-emergency debriefings, effective communication among the obstetrical team and with the patient/family, and thorough documentation practices. Since a key focus in risk mitigation is preparedness, this toolkit also provides checklists for readiness and guidelines for obstetrical emergency drills and simulations, which have been proven to improve communication and performance among team members and ultimately improve patient safety.

Curi’s risk mitigation resources and guidance are offered for educational and informational purposes only.
