Risk Management Guide: Medication Management

One of the most common processes performed in medical offices, hospitals, and emergency departments (ED)—the prescribing of medications—is also one of the leading causes of preventable injury to patients. Medication errors are among the most frequent allegations in medical malpractice claims, as they often result in some degree of adverse events. According to the FDA, medication errors cause at least one death every day and injure approximately 1.3 million people annually. Factors leading to patient injury and malpractice claims include:
