< 1 Minute Read

On October 27, 2022, Dr. Karen L. Smith, a N.C.-based family physician and passionate equity advocate, presented a new webinar in Curi’s Health Equity series on “Advancing Health Equity: Lessons from the Past Leading Toward an Inclusive Future.”

During this session, Dr. Smith provided a historical review of the “separate but equal” concept in the medical field and how discrimination was embedded as a way of life for patients and practices of the past. She also explored how the COVID-19 pandemic revived some of those sentiments and challenges for U.S. patients and providers—and discussed opportunities to take steps toward real change in healthcare. In addition, Dr. Smith helped listeners:

  1. Identify equity-oriented healthcare delivery challenges faced by patients, physicians, and systems—from the past and now
  2. Understand downstream efforts motivating policy and advocacy towards community health
  3. Recognize the value of sustaining equity-oriented initiatives and the powerful impact of social determinants of health

A recording of the webinar is embedded below. The webinar slides can be accessed here.
