IS A PHYSICIAN REQUIRED TO REPORT INJURIES RELATED TO SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE? WHAT ABOUT ELDERLY OR DISABLED ADULT ABUSE?

Yes. Physicians and any person licensed or certified to practice in any health-related field under the jurisdiction of the Department of State of Pennsylvania has a responsibility to report suspected child abuse.

Both the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine and the State Board of Medicine have identical regulations requiring healthcare practitioners to report child abuse. These “mandated reporters” shall make a report of suspected child abuse if they have reasonable cause to suspect that a child is a victim of child abuse.
