Advanced Practice Provider Toolkit: North Carolina Introduction Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) such as Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) are professionals educated, certified, and licensed to perform such functions as health promotion, history taking, physical examination, diagnosis, and treatment of commonly encountered medical problems. The NP is jointly regulated by the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) and the North Carolina Medical Board (NCMB).
