Curi Board of Directors Appoints New Leadership

Dr. Robert E. Schaaf Elected Chairman, and Dr. Chris M. Teigland Elected Vice Chairman

RALEIGH, N.C., July 1, 2019—Curi, the nation’s premier provider of products, services, and experiences for physicians, today announced that its Board of Directors has elected Robert E. Schaaf, MD FACR, as Chairman. Dr. Schaaf succeeds Thomas H. McCoy, MD, who led the Board for nine years and continues to serve on the Curi Board. In the same meeting, the Board also elected Chris M. Teigland, MD FACS, as Vice Chairman.

Dr. Schaaf’s distinguished career has been marked by outstanding clinical, business, and community leadership. He joined Wake Radiology, based in Raleigh, NC, in 1980, and served as the practice’s President and Managing Partner from 1986 to 2013. He was the President of the North Carolina Medical Society from 2014-2015, earned the North Carolina Radiologic Society’s Silver Medal for Distinguished Service in 2019, and has served on the North Carolina Medical Care Commission since 2004. He was named Business Leader of the Year by Business Leader Magazine in 2012. In 2015, Dr. Schaaf was presented by North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest honor a North Carolina governor can bestow upon people who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments. He joined the Curi Board, then Medical Mutual, in 1998, and became Vice Chairman in 2010.

Dr. Teigland is a urologic oncologist at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, where he served as founding Chairman of the Department of Urology from 1994 to 2017. He also founded Carolinas Medical Center’s Center for Advanced Practice, the nation’s largest post-graduate fellowship program for physician assistants and nurse practitioners. He joined the Curi Board in 1991, and he has served on the Board’s Executive Committee from 1994-1995 and 1999-present.

“Curi is a truly unique company, and I am honored to have a role in guiding it in its mission to help physicians in medicine, business, and life,” Dr. Schaaf said.

“Dr. Schaaf’s leadership comes at an exciting time for the company,” Curi CEO Dale Jenkins said, adding, “His experience on our board, together with his business acumen and sterling reputation in the medical community, will serve us well as we expand our offerings and we approach fifty years of serving physicians and those who support them.”
