Medicare Open Payments Review Period Begins April 1

The federal Open Payments database maintained by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is a searchable public record of all payments to physicians and teaching hospitals from pharmaceutical and medical device companies. The public reporting of this information is intended to spotlight potential conflicts of interest for physicians—a goal that is only possible with accurate information.

Beginning on April 1, physicians and their practices have 45 days to review and dispute any records of 2018 payments attributed to them that were reported to the Open Payments database by pharmaceutical and medical device companies. The payment data will then be made available to the public on the Open Payments website on June 30.

We strongly encourage all physicians to review, and dispute if necessary, the financial data related to them during this upcoming review period, as the release of incorrect information can create unnecessary reputational damage to physicians and their practices.

Information on how to register to review and dispute financial data is available on the Open Payments website.

As an additional service, Curi has partnered with Venops to provide member physicians and their practices with a free personalized report detailing the relevant data in the Open Payments database after it has been made public. Physicians have until December 31 each year to dispute any information that has been made publicly available in the Open Payments database.

Members can find out how to obtain their consolidated report by visiting the Venops Open Payments section of our website.
