Practice ManagementJanuary 23, 2019April 6, 2023 CME Webinar: Understanding Health Literacy By: Curi Editorial Team 2 Minute Read According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), only 12 percent of U.S. adults have proficient health literacy, and more than one-third would have difficulty with common health tasks. In order to take a more active role in their own care, it’s important that patients have the ability to understand all healthcare-related communications, such as prescription medications, consent forms, and discharge instructions. When physicians take the time to provide information in a way that patients can understand and act upon, the quality of care may improve significantly. Promoting health literacy among patients As part of our ongoing continuing medical education (CME) series, the Risk Management Team has developed a webinar to help physicians promote health literacy among patients. The webinar is led by Andy Bowman, Director of Continuing Professional Education at the Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Services and President of the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, alongside Anita Linton, Senior Risk Manager at Medical Mutual. Bowman teaches and mentors medical students and leads continuing medical education programs, and Linton has extensive experience educating physicians on how to optimize patient care and avoid potential liability risks. During this educational webinar, participants can expect to learn the following: Evidence-based standards to improving health literacy Best practices for creating and/or changing patient communications documents How to recognize low health literacy risk populations in the U.S. Methods to improve understanding among patients with limited health literacy The webinar can be accessed here: “Understanding Health Literacy.” Members will need to log in to view the webinar and can claim CME credit after completing a post-webinar test and evaluation. Our additional CME-eligible webinars are available here: https://www.medicalmutualgroup.com/rm-webinars. Curi is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
