Director, Underwriting

The Role

We’re looking for an individual with strong leadership skills and medical liability underwriting expertise to work in our Underwriting Department as Director, Underwriting. Reporting to the Vice President, Underwriting, in this role you will lead a designated underwriting team. You will be responsible for executing a business plan as it pertains to your team, including working closely with Business Development and Member Services Departments to achieve targeted growth and rate and retention targets. In addition, you will work closely with the VP of Underwriting and the SVP of Underwriting to build prospective business plans while developing and fostering relationships with brokers and key clients.

Responsibilities

  • Manage direct reports to execute on company- and team-specific business plans and profitability metrics
  • Clearly communicate strategy and work with underwriting team to align resources to service broker and client demands in a timely manner—responsible for appropriate inclusion of actuarial resources when appropriate
  • Develop relationships with key broker contacts and provide insights to leverage these relationships for profitable growth
  • Maintain full understanding of MPL product offerings and draw on this knowledge to influence solutions around product structures, coverages, or pricing
  • Provide technical advice to underwriting team as needed
  • Interface with other departments to gather information and coordinate services (e.g., IT/Claims)
  • Special projects and responsibilities as assigned by senior management
  • Manage day-to-day supervision of assigned personnel, including providing input to management on personnel resource planning
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and coverage, especially during extended absences, holidays, and high-volume periods
  • Complete performance reviews and provide feedback to direct reports regarding performance, goals, and development in cooperation with the Vice President, Underwriting
  • Supervise Underwriters and Underwriting Assistants

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Seven years of medical professional liability underwriting experience
  • Experience managing direct reports and/or experience training and mentoring others

 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, risk management, or related area
  • Three years of supervisory experience
  • Three years of project management experience
  • Attainment of one of more of the following insurance professional designations: RPLU, CPCU, ARM, or CIC
